Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to buy a katana in the UK?

Yes, for adults aged 18 and over. Since 2008, curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more may only be sold if they were made before 1954 or hand-forged using traditional methods. Every Tetsuren sword is hand-forged. Carrying a sword in a public place without good reason is an offence: transport it wrapped, for a legitimate purpose such as a dojo class or re-enactment. Rules can differ in Scotland.

How is my sword delivered?

Free, tracked and signed for, with duties and import VAT already included. The carrier hands the parcel only to the buyer, aged 18 or over, after checking photo ID (passport or UK driving licence). It cannot be left with a neighbour or in a safe place. Allow 1–3 working days to prepare, then 5–15 working days delivery.

Are your swords really hand-forged?

Yes. Each blade is forged, heat-treated and polished by hand by specialist smiths, with a full tang. Higher-end models are clay-tempered for a genuine hamon. The steel and construction of each sword are stated on its product page.

Are your swords sharpened?

No. Every Tetsuren sword is supplied unsharpened, with a blunt edge: they are decorative pieces made for display, collection, cosplay and gifts.

What is the difference between a katana, a wakizashi and a tanto?

Blade length: over 60 cm for the katana, 30 to 60 cm for the wakizashi and under 30 cm for the tanto. Worn together, the katana and wakizashi form the daishō.

Which steel should I choose?

1060 and 1095 high-carbon steels are tough and easy to maintain. T10 adds tungsten for excellent edge retention and a clear hamon. Folded Damascus steel shows a unique layered grain. See our steel guide.

How do I look after a katana?

Wipe the blade after handling, apply a thin film of oil (choji oil) every few weeks, and store the sword horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp. Never touch the blade with bare fingers.

Can I return a sword?

Yes, within 30 days of delivery if it is unused and in its original packaging. Engraved or custom-made swords cannot be returned for a change of mind, but they are fully covered if faulty. See our refund policy.

Tetsuren 鉄錬, forged steel

Tetsuren brings hand-forged Japanese swords to collectors and enthusiasts in the United Kingdom: katanas, wakizashi, tanto, ninjato and odachi, alongside European longswords and Viking swords. Each blade is forged, tempered and polished by hand, with a full tang, and delivered free across the UK with duties included.

Made for display

Every Tetsuren sword is supplied unsharpened, as a decorative piece for display, collection, cosplay or a gift. Steel, construction, dimensions and fittings are stated on every product page, so you know exactly what you are buying.

Bought responsibly

We sell only to adults aged 18 and over, and every sword is delivered against a signature after a photo ID check. Swords must be transported wrapped and only for a legitimate purpose: see our FAQ for UK law.
