Blade (刀身): In Damascus steel, the blade offers distinctive visual beauty with its unique wavy patterns. Damascus steel is famous for its strength and its ability to hold an exceptional edge, making it a favoured choice for connoisseurs and practitioners of the Japanese sword arts.

Guard (Tsuba 鍔): The finely carved iron and brass guard is a true work of art. Iron offers unrivalled sturdiness, while brass adds a touch of shine and resistance to corrosion, helping the beauty of the tsuba last over time.

Scabbard (Saya 鞘): The lacquered magnolia wood protects the blade with elegance and durability. This wood is chosen for its natural sturdiness and its ability to keep its shape over time, while offering a smooth finish and a rich, textured look.

Handle (Tsuka 柄): Covered in ray-skin leather, the handle gives a secure and comfortable grip. Ray skin is valued for its granular texture, which prevents slipping, combining safety and elegance in every movement.

Buying a sword in the UK

Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.

Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.

Care

Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
