The Katana Tengu 天狗 embodies a fusion of robustness and finesse, with a manganese steel blade that ensures solidity and durability. Manganese steel is renowned for its hardness and impact resistance, making it an ideal choice for a sturdy display katana blade.

The brown blade has an earthy look, symbolising strength and stability, while the finely carved copper guard (Tsuba 鍔) adds a touch of antique elegance and resistance to corrosion.

The scabbard (Saya 鞘), made of sturdy ebony wood, offers solid protection for the blade, and its bull horn Kurigata with a hard-wearing cord underlines a commitment to high-quality, durable materials.

The handle (Tsuka 柄) in genuine ray skin leather ensures a comfortable and secure grip, ray skin being renowned for its unique texture and its resistance to humidity and wear.

The copper Menuki set completes the design with a touch of refinement and historical connection, copper being traditionally appreciated for its antibacterial properties and the fine patina that develops over time.

Buying a sword in the UK

Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.

Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.

Care

Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
