The Katana Suigyoku 翠玉 is a remarkable piece that combines natural elegance with technical sturdiness.
Blade (刀身): Made from spring steel, the blade offers flexibility and resilience, absorbing shocks without compromising the keenness of the edge. Hand hammering is not only a mark of craftsmanship but also strengthens the structure of the steel, giving a blade that is both beautiful and robust.
Guard (tsuba 鍔): The sculpted, gilded zinc alloy forms the guard, combining strength and aesthetics. The gilding adds visual richness, and the zinc offers corrosion resistance and a lightness that keeps the katana balanced.
Scabbard (saya 鞘): The green lacquered wood of the saya, with a matching sageo, protects the blade effectively and echoes the colour of the handle for a harmonious look. The lacquer protects the wood from the elements and from scratches, while the cotton sageo gives a secure, practical hold when carrying the sword.
Handle (tsuka 柄): The genuine green rayskin gives a firm grip and comfort in use. Known for its durability and unique texture, this skin provides optimal grip, which matters when handling a katana. The copper menuki and bamboo mekugi are not only decorative: they are essential to the structure and integrity of the handle, keeping the blade securely in place.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
