Blade (刀身): Forged in T10 steel, known for its high carbon content, the grey blade of this katana offers exceptional strength and durability. The presence of a Hamon (hardening line) reflects traditional selective hardening techniques, giving greater hardness at the edge while keeping flexibility in the spine of the blade.

Guard (Tsuba 鍔): The finely carved iron guard is the product of a long metalworking tradition. Its iron composition ensures lasting solidity, essential for protecting the hand during handling and practice.

Scabbard (Saya 鞘): The solid lacquered wood scabbard is not only robust, protecting the blade from the elements, but its lacquer also provides a refined aesthetic finish that underlines the elegance of the katana.

Handle (Tsuka 柄): The combination of solid wood and ray skin leather for the handle ensures a comfortable grip and added durability. Ray skin is renowned for its unique texture and durability, offering better grip and less wear over time.

Cord (Sageo): The traditional cord, typically silk or cotton, is chosen here for its robustness and its ability to withstand humidity, which is crucial for preserving the tsuka.

Dimensions: With a total length of 103 cm (40.6 in) and a blade of 71 cm (28.0 in), the katana is well suited to practice and handling. Its balanced design allows smooth, precise handling.

Buying a sword in the UK

Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.

Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.

Care

Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
