Description and specifications

The Muromachi Hishi-Toji samurai armour (cross-knot armour) was worn by high-ranking samurai in the late Muromachi to Sengoku period.

Our kachi-class model is made with a Tosei Okegawa Ni-mai Do (hinged two-piece cuirass) and is composed of 14 individual steel armour plates joined by hand with odoshi (lacing).

As with the Taisho and Gashira-class Muromachi Hishi-Toji, total assembly takes more than 50 hours. The O-Sode (shield-like shoulder armour) has colourful kebiki-odoshi lacing (also called "full lacing") that our craftsmen are happy to colour for you, in different patterns or shapes.

This colourful lacing gives the armour a vibrant appearance, just like the classic samurai of legend.

Each armour comes pre-fitted for a person between 1.60 m and 1.85 m tall of average build. The armour can be easily adjusted.

Buying a sword in the UK

Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.

Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.

Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
