The Kamon 家紋 Katana is a remarkable example of Japanese craftsmanship, combining traditional aesthetics with careful attention to detail for the modern collector.
Blade (刀身): Made of flexible steel, the blade is designed for flexibility and resilience. The two bo-hi (blade grooves) are not merely an aesthetic feature; they lighten the blade, improve its balance and produce a distinct sound on a swift cut, which helps the user correct their technique.
Guard (Tsuba 鍔): Copper, the material of the tsuba, is known for its malleability, allowing extremely fine sculpted detail. It develops a natural patina over time, which adds to the character of the sword. The finely worked details of the tsuba offer robust protection and an aesthetic that pays tribute to the samurai tradition.
Scabbard (Saya 鞘): The lacquered wooden saya bears a dragon motif, symbolising power and wisdom. The wood, chosen for its strength, is lacquered to protect against the elements, and the cotton sageo allows secure carrying and attractive presentation.
Handle (Tsuka 柄): Covered in genuine white rayskin, the tsuka offers a secure and comfortable grip. Rayskin is valued for its durability and unique texture, which prevents slipping. The copper menuki add to the look and also act as studs for a better hold.
