The Katana Watatsumi 海神 evokes the immensity and power of the ocean. Its design and materials are chosen to reflect the majesty and grace of the sea deity of Japanese mythology.
Blade (刀身): T10 steel is renowned for its hardness and strength, which is essential for a katana blade that must hold its edge while remaining flexible. The visible Hamon is the result of a clay-hardening process, demonstrating the skill of the swordsmith and giving the blade a distinctive look.
Guard (Tsuba 鍔): The carved copper Tsuba is a traditional choice for its malleability and durability. The meticulous detail adds both distinctive character and historical value to the whole, reflecting Japanese decorative craftsmanship.
Scabbard (Saya 鞘): The lacquered wood of the Saya, decorated with dragon motifs, is not only pleasing to the eye but also protects the blade effectively. The cotton sageo is hard-wearing and adds a touch of traditional colour that contrasts with the lacquer.
Handle (Tsuka 柄): Genuine white ray skin gives a grippy, durable surface, a quality valued in martial arts for its secure grip. The copper Menuki add a touch of elegance and are positioned for perfect balance in the hand.
This katana is a fusion of function, art and spirituality, capturing the essence of Watatsumi, the god of the sea, in every element of its design.
