The Katana Ray 鱝 is a centrepiece that reflects the skill and refinement of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, made for connoisseurs and demanding martial arts practitioners.
Blade (刀身): The blade is forged in T10 steel, known for its high carbon content, which gives it exceptional hardness. The premium hamon is more than an embellishment: it also reflects a precisely applied heat treatment that improves the resilience of the blade.
Guard (tsuba 鍔): The sculpted copper guard is a jewel of craftsmanship, combining traditional aesthetics and function. Copper, a malleable yet resistant metal, is well suited to absorbing impacts and protecting the practitioner's hands.
Scabbard (saya 鞘): The dark blue lacquered wood with its stingray-skin pattern is not only an aesthetic choice; it also symbolises strength and endurance. The lacquer adds protection against the elements, while the texture of the ray skin adds a distinctive tactile and visual dimension.
Handle (tsuka 柄): The handle is wrapped in genuine white rayskin, known for its toughness and non-slip texture, which ensures a firm, stable grip. The copper menuki and bamboo mekugi complete the whole, reinforcing the structure and adding a complementary decorative touch.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
