The Nihon 日本 Katana is a celebration of the Japanese spirit and aesthetic, combining traditional beauty with technical quality.
Blade (刀身): The T10 steel blade, known for its toughness, is enhanced by a flame-shaped hamon, the mark of precise forging and careful heat treatment. The blade reflects the excellence of traditional Japanese craftsmanship in every detail.
Guard (tsuba 鍔): The carved copper tsuba on a black ground is the aesthetic focal point of the katana, offering robust protection and artistic detail rich in symbolism. Copper, a metal traditionally used for tsuba, is valued for its durability and for a patina that improves with time.
Scabbard (saya 鞘): The deep black lacquered saya is set off by delicate paintings of Japanese motifs, making the scabbard a work of art in itself. The lacquer gives added protection against the elements, while the painted motifs illustrate Japan's cultural heritage.
Handle (tsuka 柄): Wrapped in genuine white shagreen, the tsuka gives a firm grip and long-term durability. The iron menuki and bamboo mekugi are not mere ornaments; they reinforce the structure of the handle for a sound, dependable build.
The Nihon 日本 Katana expresses Japanese refinement, made for those who cherish the history and art of the samurai, offering a handling experience that is both a link with the past and a celebration of the present.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
