The Shiroi ki 白い木 katana, whose name evokes the image of pristine wood, is a martial work of art that combines natural grace with raw strength. It is a sword that pays tribute to both purity and power, rooted in the richness of Japanese tradition.
Blade (刀身): Forged in Damascus steel, this blade shows a cascading pattern of steel folds forged together, offering superior strength and a lasting edge as well as a striking beauty that is the result of this traditional technique. The grey colour of the blade evokes raw steel, underlining its authenticity.
Guard (Tsuba 鍔): The meticulously sculpted copper guard acts as a protective barrier for the hand and as an embellishment that shows the craftsman's skill. It also serves as a balance point for the sword, ensuring optimal handling.
Scabbard (Saya 鞘): The scabbard is made of solid wood, chosen for its strength and its ability to protect the blade. It represents the quiet, unshakeable strength of the tree it comes from, and its surface can be a canvas for artistic creativity, as the painting or lacquer that often adorns it shows.
Handle (Tsuka 柄): Covered in lacquered magnolia wood, the handle offers a comfortable, secure grip, while the rayskin (often called stingray skin) provides wear resistance and improved grip. This combination of materials is not only practical but also visually harmonious.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
