Blade (刀身): Forged in T10 steel, known for its toughness and superior hardness, the blade shows a distinctive hamon, the sign of heat treatment mastered by expert craftsmen. Polishing by a master polisher brings out the natural beauty of the hamon, giving the blade a remarkable appearance.
Guard (tsuba 鍔): The finely carved premium copper tsuba combines tradition and elegance. Copper, known for its malleability, allows intricate and detailed ornamentation while providing durability and resistance to corrosion.
Scabbard (saya 鞘): The saya, with its tachi-style mounting, features ornate kanagu, kashiwaba and kogiri fittings that underline traditional Japanese aesthetics. The tsuka-ito wrapping that continues onto the scabbard shows attention to detail and consistency of design, and adds to secure grip and carrying of the katana.
Handle (tsuka 柄): Covered in genuine shagreen leather, the handle offers a secure and comfortable hold, the texture of the shagreen increasing grip. The copper menuki enrich the look while balancing the weight of the katana, and the bamboo mekugi ensure a solid assembly.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
