The Tora 虎 katana, which translates as "The Tiger", is a refined sword that embodies the raw strength and agility of the big cat it represents. Made for the serious practitioner and the informed collector, every element of this katana is imbued with symbolism and craftsmanship that evoke the tiger, king of animals in many Asian cultures.
Blade (刀身): Forged in T10 steel, this blade is recognised for its resilience and hardness. The flame-pattern hamon is not merely decorative: it also reflects a carefully controlled hardening process.
Guard (Tsuba 鍔): The gilt copper guard carved with tigers is more than an ornament; it protects the hand. The engraved tigers recall the strength and grace of this sword.
Scabbard (Saya 鞘): The engraved magnolia wood scabbard is both light and resistant. It protects the blade and brings a clean, natural aesthetic that contrasts with the wildness symbolised by the tiger.
Handle (Tsuka 柄): Covered in genuine ray skin (galuchat) leather, the handle offers a secure and elegant grip. Galuchat, known for its durability and unique texture, was traditionally used on high-quality Japanese swords.
Menuki set: The copper menuki add weight and balance to the grip, while also serving as an additional decorative element.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
