The Wado Ichimonji Katana is an exceptional piece that combines grace with strength, a true tribute to the ancient traditions of the samurai.
Blade (刀身): The 1060 carbon steel used for the blade is chosen for its balance of flexibility and strength, giving it remarkable durability. This steel is valued for its toughness and durability, making this katana a dependable display piece.
Guard (Tsuba 鍔): The carved iron of the tsuba is not only durable but also strikingly beautiful. Iron offers undeniable toughness and protects the user's hand, while the detailed carving adds a deep aesthetic dimension to the whole.
Scabbard (Saya 鞘): Made from lightweight lacquered wood, the saya is designed for effortless portability while protecting the blade. The lacquer protects against moisture and scratches, extending the life of the katana.
Handle (Tsuka 柄): The synthetic ray skin leather gives a secure, comfortable grip, while the carved iron menuki set adds a distinctive element of personalisation. The two bamboo mekugi ensure the solidity of the katana's structure, allowing use with confidence.
The Wado Ichimonji Katana is therefore more than a simple replica; it is a work of art, carefully shaped to reflect the spirit of the modern samurai.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
