Blade (刀身): The manganese steel selected for the gold blade combines resilience and suppleness, making it an excellent choice for a durable display piece. The gold colour of the blade, unusual and striking, adds a visual dimension of prestige and distinction.

Guard (Tsuba 鍔): The sculpted copper of the tsuba offers natural resistance to corrosion while allowing intricate, elegant design details. The guard is not only an aesthetic focal point but also a practical piece protecting the hands.

Scabbard (Saya 鞘): Ebony wood for the saya is a dense, heavy wood, renowned for its durability and dark elegance. It is complemented by a bull horn kurigata, a material traditionally valued for its strength and natural beauty. The carefully braided cord provides extra security when carrying the sword and also an aesthetic contrast with the dark wood.

Handle (Tsuka 柄): Genuine rayskin is prized for its robustness and grip, improving handling and control when using the katana. The copper menuki ornaments and the bamboo mekugi ensure the structural integrity of the handle while adding touches of refined craftsmanship.

Buying a sword in the UK

Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.

Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.

Care

Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
