Description and specifications
The Edo no Hana Katana, meaning “Flower of Edo”, is a striking piece that celebrates the refined art and spirit of Edo-period Japan. Its hand-painted scabbard, meticulous ornaments and elegantly layered blade make it a treasure for collectors.
Every element, from the hand-decorated makie-style saya to the gilded tsuba, pays tribute to the aesthetics and craftsmanship of classical Japan, a time when the forge and art coexisted in perfect harmony.
FEATURES
| Blade | Forged using the San-Mai technique, with a high-carbon steel core wrapped in softer layers for added strength and flexibility. The visible hada (steel grain) and the delicate notare hamon (gentle wave pattern) reveal precise differential heat treatment, giving a resilient and beautifully textured blade. |
| Tsuba (hand guard) | Handcrafted copper tsuba with black and gold floral engravings inspired by Edo-period motifs. Every curve and petal is finely detailed, symbolising elegance, prosperity and seasonal renewal. |
| Fittings | High-quality copper fittings with gilded details and a matching floral theme on the fuchi, kashira and koiguchi. Designed for perfect balance and refined aesthetic continuity. |
| Handle (tsuka) | Wooden core wrapped in deep indigo ito over white ray skin (samegawa). Offers an excellent grip, optimal stability and an elegant traditional look. |
| Scabbard (saya) | Hand-painted black lacquered saya, decorated with Edo-inspired illustrations of samurai, courtiers and natural motifs. Each drawing is outlined in gold and lacquered for a lasting, sumptuous mirror finish. |
| Overall length | 103 cm (40.55 in) |
| Blade length | 71 cm (27.95 in) |
| Handle (tsuka) length | 27 cm (10.63 in) |
| Blade width | 3.2 cm (1.26 in) |
| Weight | Approx. 1.35 kg (2.97 lb) |
DESCRIPTION
The Edo no Hana Katana captures the cultural flowering of Japan's Edo era, a time when peace allowed art, refinement and craftsmanship to flourish. Its San-Mai blade combines fine craftsmanship with spiritual beauty, visible in its delicate undulating hamon and the fineness of its steel grain.
The black lacquered saya, decorated with colourful hand-painted figures and gold accents, tells the story of life and art in ancient Japan. The gilded floral fittings, contrasting with the indigo handle, form a composition that is both majestic and harmonious.
