Description and specifications
The Katana Akaryū 赤龍, the "Red Dragon", is one of the boldest blades in this collection. Its name is written across a deep crimson saya carved in flowing relief, where a dragon winds through swirling clouds beneath the lacquer. Paired with warm copper fittings and an unsharpened T10 steel blade, it is a sword that wears its mythology on the surface.

DESCRIPTION
The 赤龍 – Katana Akaryū takes its name from the red dragon, an auspicious guardian of fire and strength in East Asian legend. The theme lives in the saya: deep crimson lacquer carved in relief, where a sinuous dragon weaves through rolling clouds along the full length of the scabbard. The hand-finished surface shifts with the light, so each piece has its own character.
The blade is forged in high-carbon T10 steel and clay-tempered to bring out a soft, cloud-like hamon along the edge. Mirror polished for a bright finish, it offers the toughness and lustre that have made T10 a favourite of collectors.
Warm copper fittings carry the dragon motif from the habaki to the guard, their reddish glow echoing the crimson of the saya. The tsuka is wrapped in black ito over genuine white rayskin (samegawa), anchoring this fiery koshirae in a clean, classic grip with assured balance in the hand.

Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
