Blade (刀身): Forged in T10 steel, the blade shows a wavy hamon, a temper line that not only symbolises the smith's skill but also offers a striking contrast with the silvery reflection of the steel. The high carbon content of T10 steel gives the blade exceptional hardness and long-term durability. The hand-hammered finish gives each sword an individual character, making it a distinctive work of art.
Guard (Tsuba 鍔): The guard is finely worked in copper, adorned with gold and silver, depicting themes from nature. It is not only a protective element but also adds balance to the sword, making it easier to handle. The detailed floral motifs pay tribute to the heritage of the katana, giving it a sense of life and growth.
Scabbard (Saya 鞘): The green lacquered wood saya represents the natural world, complemented by a contrasting black sageo. The lacquered finish not only improves the look of the saya but also protects it from the elements, ensuring its longevity.
Handle (Tsuka 柄): Wrapped in genuine white ray skin, the handle offers a secure grip, essential for precise movements in practice. The texture of the ray skin, combined with the intricate patterns of the wrap (tsukamaki), gives a tactile experience that connects the practitioner to the sword.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
