The Ryousei 流星 Katana, meaning “shooting star” in Japanese, embodies beauty and finesse for those who appreciate the art of the sword. Every element of this katana has been carefully chosen for its quality and symbolism.
Blade (刀身): T10 steel is renowned for its high strength and hardness. The mirror polish is not only aesthetic; it highlights the hamon and the fine grain of the steel.
Guard (Tsuba 鍔): The carved, gilded copper guard is not only an ornament but also protection for the hand. Copper is valued for its malleability and durability, allowing complex motifs and lasting wear.
Scabbard (Saya 鞘): The green lacquered wood of the saya offers sturdy protection for the blade, while the green and white sageo allows a secure fastening at the belt.
Handle (Tsuka 柄): Genuine ray skin gives a firm grip and added longevity. The gold tsuka-ito is not only an aesthetic choice but also gives a better hold, which is important for control of the sword.
The Ryousei Katana is therefore more than a simple sword; it is a collector's piece that captures the spirit of the samurai and the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
