Dark Sister is one of the two ancestral Valyrian steel swords of House Targaryen in Game of Thrones: the lighter, slimmer one, made for speed rather than brute strength, carried by Visenya Targaryen and later by Brynden Rivers, known as "Bloodraven". This inspired recreation follows that logic to the letter.
Blade: 83 cm (32.7 in) of 60Si2CrVA spring steel, mirror polished and drawn to a long, even taper: narrow, quick and precise.
Guard: A narrow 304 stainless steel crossguard with slim, downward-curving quillons, deliberately understated so that nothing breaks the clean line of the sword.
Scabbard: A wooden core covered in microfibre leather, with locket and chape in polished steel, dark and unadorned.
Handle: The 22.5 cm (8.9 in) grip is hand-wrapped in microfibre leather over a wooden core, long enough to accommodate a supporting second hand, and finished with a sculpted pommel.
Dimensions: At 116 cm (45.7 in) long and only 1.65 kg (3.6 lb), Dark Sister is the lightest sword in the collection at this length, which is exactly the point.
An essential display piece for Game of Thrones collectors, and a genuinely elegant sword in its own right.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
