The Kikumon 菊紋 Katana, whose name echoes the chrysanthemum motif, a symbol of royalty in Japan, is a sword that combines the majesty of tradition with the demands of modern quality.
Blade (刀身): Forged in 1095 steel, a high-carbon steel known for its hardness, the blade carries a distinctive claw-shaped hamon, reflecting precise and artistic heat treatment.
Guard (tsuba 鍔): The gilded pure copper guard, carved with chrysanthemum motifs, not only protects the hand effectively; it also pays tribute to Japanese history and aesthetics, adding a dimension of nobility to the sword.
Scabbard (saya 鞘): Made of ebony wood, recognised for its robustness and elegance, the scabbard is completed by a bull-horn kurigata, combining strength and natural prestige.
Handle (tsuka 柄): Shagreen leather, prized for its distinctive texture and resilience, offers a secure grip and a luxury finish, increasing the tactile and visual appeal of the katana.
Menuki set: The gilded copper handle ornaments complete the refined aesthetic of the katana while balancing the sword for optimised handling.
Buying a sword in the UK
Sold only to adults aged 18 and over. Curved swords with a blade of 50 cm or more are hand-forged using traditional methods, as required by the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (Offensive Weapons) Order as amended in 2008.
Carrying a bladed article in a public place without good reason is an offence. Transport your sword wrapped, and only for a legitimate purpose (dojo, re-enactment, collection). Rules may differ in Scotland.
Care
- Wipe the blade after every handling with a soft cloth; never touch it with bare fingers.
- Apply a thin film of oil every few weeks to prevent rust.
- Store it horizontally in its saya, edge up, away from damp.
- Use only on suitable practice targets (rolled tatami mats, bamboo); never strike hard objects.
